Why the Maldives remains the ultimate honeymoon destination in 2026
There are destinations designed for travel, and then there are destinations designed for moments people remember for the rest of their lives.
The Maldives has long belonged to the latter.
Across its scattered atolls, where villas stand above turquoise lagoons and sunsets arrive uninterrupted by city skylines, the Maldives continues to shape what modern honeymoon travel looks like. It is a destination where privacy is not marketed as an added luxury, but naturally built into the geography itself. Each island feels removed from the world around it, allowing couples to step into experiences that feel deeply personal from the moment they arrive.
That enduring appeal has once again been recognised globally, with the Maldives earning a nomination for Indian Ocean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination 2026 at the prestigious World Travel Awards.
For couples searching for the perfect honeymoon, the Maldives offers more than postcard imagery. It offers a rare combination of seclusion, curated luxury, and immersive island experiences that continue to define romantic travel worldwide.
The journey itself becomes part of the experience. Arrivals by seaplane reveal endless rings of coral islands surrounded by shifting shades of blue, while speedboat transfers cut across lagoons towards private island resorts where time immediately slows down. From candlelit dinners set on isolated sandbanks to floating breakfasts above the ocean, the destination has mastered the art of creating intimate moments without feeling manufactured.
Yet romance in the Maldives is not defined by luxury alone.
It is found in the quietness of mornings over the water, in shared dives through coral reefs, in sunset cruises across open seas, and in wellness experiences designed around stillness and reconnection. Increasingly, honeymooners are seeking destinations that feel meaningful rather than performative, and the Maldives continues to resonate because of that authenticity.
This year’s nomination also reflects the diversity of experiences available across the destination’s resort portfolio. Eleven resorts have been recognised under the Maldives’ Leading Honeymoon Resort 2026 category, highlighting the breadth of romantic escapes available across the islands.
These include iconic properties such as Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa Private Island, The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, COMO Cocoa Island, OBLU SELECT Lobigili, and Angsana Velavaru, each offering its own interpretation of romance, from ultra-private island retreats to immersive wellness and marine experiences.
For Visit Maldives, the nomination reflects continued efforts to position the destination as the world’s leading romantic escape through experience-led storytelling, strategic partnerships, and destination marketing that goes beyond traditional luxury narratives.
As global travel increasingly shifts towards meaningful and experience-driven journeys, the Maldives remains uniquely positioned to meet that demand. The destination continues to evolve while preserving the qualities that first made it synonymous with romance, privacy, and connection.
