Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru Celebrates 30 Years of Eco-Luxury in the Maldives

On 24 September 2025, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, the first international luxury hotel chain to establish a presence in the Maldives, commemorated its 30th anniversary under the theme “The Legacy Continues.” The celebration honored three decades of barefoot eco-luxury, sustainability, and heartfelt hospitality—principles that remain central to Banyan Tree’s philosophy of a Sanctuary for the Senses.
A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Connection
The anniversary evening showcased Maldivian cultural heritage through a vibrant series of events. Guests explored the "Walk of Legacy" photo exhibition, reflecting the resort’s journey since its grand opening on 23 September 1995. They also engaged in traditional artistry at the local corner Vabbin Fannu, featuring Thundu Kunaa reed weaving, Liye Laajehun lacquerware, Kasabu Viyun embroidery, and the proud traditions of local fishing heritage. The evening included a Styrofoam workshop by a local resident artist, transforming discarded materials into meaningful art, alongside soulful rhythms of Bodu Beru and cultural dances that brought the island’s stories to life.
A defining moment occurred when Banyan Tree’s founders and honored guests unveiled fire signage rising from the ocean—inscribed with “The Legacy Continues.” This symbolic gesture reaffirmed the commitment to carry forward the spirit of sustainability, wellbeing, and community for generations to come.
A Vision That Set a Benchmark for Luxury Tourism
Since its inception in 1995, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru has embodied the Original Maldives spirit. Long before sustainability became a global focus, the resort pioneered regenerative practices in the Maldives—introducing the country’s first resort-based marine lab in 2004 and championing coral restoration and environmental education.
The resort also introduced spa experiences to the Maldives in 1995, setting a new benchmark for luxury hospitality. Today, Banyan Tree Spa & Wellbeing continues to honor the sacred bonds between self and nature through holistic practices rooted in centuries-old Asian healing wisdom.
More than a destination, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru is a barefoot sanctuary for the senses, rooted in sustainability and local heritage—a place where nature, culture, and a sense of belonging craft an unforgettable journey.
Marking Three Decades Through Milestones That Matter

- National Community Clean-Up: In partnership with international and national NGOs, the resort united nationwide islands and thousands of participants under the tagline “One Nation. One Ocean. One Hour,” collecting thousands of pieces of plastic trash.
- Partnership with Maldives National University: A pioneering Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) launched a Marine Foundational Course, giving Maldivian students hands-on training at the resort’s marine laboratory. Many associates have been part of Vabbinfaru since 1995, carrying its sanctuary spirit for three decades. Deputy General Manager Mohamed Naeem, who began his journey before the resort officially opened, shared, “Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru transformed associate welfare in the Maldives, pioneering associate leave every three months, along with training and benefits that set industry standards. This culture of genuine care fostered loyalty, making Banyan Tree among the nation’s most preferred employers for three decades.”
Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, Founder and Executive Chairman of Banyan Group, added, “When we opened Vabbinfaru in 1995, our vision was to create a sanctuary where people could rediscover their bond with nature, their loved ones, and themselves. That vision, grounded in sustainability, wellbeing, and the empowerment of people, continues to guide us today. It is a legacy we are devoted to safeguarding and passing on to the generations that will follow.”
Mr. Elias Pertoft, General Manager of Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, shared, “For 30 years, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru has stayed true to the Original Maldives spirit—a barefoot sanctuary of heartfelt hospitality. As we enter the fourth decade, we remain pioneering regenerative tourism in the Maldives. From safeguarding marine conservation and associate welfare to unveiling new dimensions of well-being and cultural heritage, the resort continues to invite travelers to rediscover the Maldives as it was meant to be experienced—authentic, idyllic, and in harmony with nature.”
