5 Unique Experiences to Make the Most of Your Winter Holidays
Winter giving you the chills and blues? Worry not, the sun is always shining in the Maldives, the Sunny Side of Life. Here are five of the most unique experiences to have in the Maldives to drive those winter blues away, and greet the new year full of bright smiles and warm memories.
1. Sea-to-Table Kattelhi Experience
If you have ever enjoyed a farm-to-table experience, then we have something that will completely blow your mind. While farm-to-table is available in many different areas of the Maldives, the sea-to-table experience of making kattelhi garudhiya is completely different. The best island to do this would be Fuvahmulah island far in the south of the Maldives, where kattelhi garudhiya is a delicacy and speciality, with locals arranging special trips to go catch these elusive little fish at sundown, bring them back and cook them on the beach for a delicious and well-earned communal dinner.
For those of you who wish to try this the Fuvahmulah way, eat your Kattelhi Garudhiya with rice, freshly-boiled taro from the Fuvahmulah taro fields, lemon, and scraped coconut on the side. Squeezing some lemon onto the fish truly elevates the taste, and for the adventurous and lovers of spices, we would recommend a side of Lonumirus aka Maldivian chilli paste.
2. Enjoy a Picnic on a Secluded Sandbank
Just you, your loved ones, a delicious packed meal, and nothing but blue on blue skies and seas! Perhaps the best part of a sandbank picnic is the chance to disconnect from everything else and be fully present. The calming sound of the ocean, the warmth of the sun, and the pristine beauty around you create a peaceful environment where time seems to stand still. It’s the ultimate escape, where you can relax, unwind, and take in the beauty of nature in one of the most breathtaking places on Earth.
Your hosts will typically set up a cosy picnic spot with shaded seating, perhaps under a small tent or umbrella. Your meal might feature fresh Maldivian tuna sandwiches, tropical fruit, and refreshing coconuts, or anything else you and your loved ones wish to enjoy. Take a book and read with your toes dipped into the gently lapping waves, build sand castles, make sand angels, or whatever else you want. Enjoy your time on your private Maldivian sandbank however you please.
3. Hiking Across Islands During Low Tide
Hiking between closeby islands in an atoll is a favourite pastime for many Maldivians, but you must be very aware of the changing tides if you want to do this! During low tide, some islands are close enough that you can walk between them, exploring sandbanks, coral flats, and discovering shells and marine life along the way. But timing is everything; the tides can change quickly, so it’s best to go with a local guide who knows the ins and outs of these fascinating, temporary pathways.
This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to immerse yourself in the stunning natural landscapes of the Maldives. But again, we advise you never to attempt this by yourself. You really don’t want to get caught in between islands when the tides are rising, and it can happen much faster than you anticipate.
4. Glass-bottomed Canoe Ride
For those who don’t want to or cannot dive or snorkel, you can still experience the majesty of the Maldives’ underwater by taking a ride on a glass-bottomed canoe. Paddle gently across the water, watching coral reefs and colourful fish swim just beneath you. The Maldives’ waters are incredibly clear, offering you an unmatched view of the coral gardens and marine life below. You can even take some fish food with you to feed the marine life, like you are relaxing on the top of a giant fish tank.
This experience is perfect for anyone looking to relax, connect with nature, and take in the ocean’s wonders in a truly unique way, especially if you have young children with you who can’t go diving or snorkelling yet. We recommend an umbrella to keep the sun away and don’t forget to get some gorgeous snapshots!
5. Island-hopping at Your Own Pace and Leisure
One of the best ways to experience the Maldives is by island-hopping. Each island has its own unique charm, culture, and character, whether it’s a bustling local island with shops and markets, a serene private island resort, or a remote island with untouched beaches. Travel by ferry (a traditional Maldivian boat) or speedboat, soaking in the natural beauty as you journey from one destination to the next.
Ferries in the Maldives usually cost 1-4 USD, while the speedboat ferry prices differ depending on how far you are travelling, generally between 15-45 USD. Take your time, enjoy each stop, and let the Maldives’ diverse islands make for a winter holiday like no other.
