After 25 Years Together, a Wedding Beneath the Indian Ocean at Villa Nautica
Frank and Heike Reestorff had already spent 25 years together when they returned to Villa Nautica for their third stay. This time, their anniversary would be marked with something they had imagined on an earlier visit: an underwater wedding ceremony in the Maldives, surrounded by the people closest to them.
The idea had first surfaced the previous November, while the couple were diving with diveOceanus at Villa Nautica. Their brief was wonderfully simple: a small ceremony at a shallow dive site, with boards carrying the words of the wedding. Rather than turn it into a spectacle, the team kept that intimacy at the heart of the planning and quietly built something more personal around it.
Maagiri Reef was chosen for its sandy top reef and clear underwater setting. The dive team created a heart-shaped frame and what they called a "bubble island": 12 scuba cylinders positioned around the ceremony space, wrapped with palm leaves and released together to send streams of bubbles upwards through the water. The couple's ceremony phrases were laser-engraved onto wooden plaques in German, a small detail that made the setting feel unmistakably theirs.
There was another piece to work out. Frank and Heike wanted their son, his girlfriend and two close friends beside them underwater. The friends had never dived before, so diveOceanus introduced them to scuba through Discover Scuba Diving, building the confidence and basic skills they needed before joining the couple in a supervised repeat session for the ceremony.
Above the surface, the island came together around the same idea. Villa Nautica's Island Hosts and teams across the resort helped dress the boat for the wedding journey, create the personalised details, capture the ceremony underwater and from the air, and leave thoughtful touches waiting back at the villa. It was less a fixed wedding package than a response to one couple's story - an approach that also shapes weddings and romantic celebrations at Villa Nautica.
Villa Nautica has been nominated for Indian Ocean's Leading Honeymoon Resort at the World Travel Awards in 2023, 2024 and 2025, while Villa Resorts' wider diving credentials were recognised in 2026 when Royal Island, also home to diveOceanus, was named Best Dive Resort at the TTM Awards. But the most telling response came underwater: when Heike saw what had been created, she cried. "Everything was simply perfect and beyond expectations," the couple later said. They took the engraved plaques and wedding banner home with them - keepsakes from a day 25 years in the making.
