According to the Ministry of Tourism, Maldives has so far received over 47,000 tourists in 2021, with the highest number being recorded on 3rd January with 4,195 arrivals. Currently, the average figure for tourist arrivals is 2,900 per day.
Russia remains the top market with over 12,000 arrivals while India takes second place with over 8,000 arrivals. Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Romania follow. Looking at other markets, although China is still not open for travel, there has been a constant surge in travelers who are looking forward to visiting once they can. In addition, key European markets are still under various degrees of restrictions, including the UK.
2020 ended with Maldives celebrating the arrival of 500,000 tourists for the year. In addition, 100,000 tourists arrived since the reopening of borders on 15th July 2020. This is indeed a remarkable feat, considering the pandemic we are going through. Even through such unprecedented times, the tourism industry continues to remain vigilant and work towards increasing the tourist arrival numbers.
In spite of the challenges faced, the tourism industry seems to be picking up and we have reached a level of success that is impressive.
