The Maldives Minister of Tourism, Ibrahim Faisal, has reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to diversification of the tourism sector towards a more enjoyable travel experience for visitors, and a more sustainable future for our islands. He made this statement while speaking as the Guest of Honour at the Maldives Media Meet press conference hosted by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC / Visit Maldives) on the sidelines of ITB Berlin 2024 this Tuesday. 

Speaking to the German and International media representatives at the event, Hon Minister Faisal emphasised a commitment to offering a richer and more diverse visitor experience through responsible tourism practices, technology integration, community-based tourism, and expanded tourism products and markets. He spotlighted the groundbreaking eco-tourism framework launched by the Ministry of Tourism earlier last month as proof of the Maldives’ commitment to this cause. 

“While Europe remains a significant contributor, we are seeing a growing share of visitors from East Asia, the Middle East, and other regions," the Minister stated, highlighting the importance of diversifying beyond traditional markets. "We are exploring the exciting potential of sports tourism, MICE , wellness, and medical tourism," 

Looking beyond the luxurious resorts, the Minister drew attention to community-based tourism initiatives. "The Maldives offers a unique opportunity to delve into the heart of our vibrant communities," he stated, highlighting the availability of over 14,000 tourist beds in guest houses across the Maldivian Atolls. Connectivity’s important role was also recognised

by the Minister, as was the fact that tourists’ safety and security remain a top priority for the Maldives. 

With an ambitious yet attainable goal of welcoming 2 million visitors in 2024, the Maldives is set to witness a significant increase in arrivals. This growth reflects the resilience and recovery of the tourism industry, and the Minister concluded by extending a warm invitation to travellers worldwide to visit the Sunny Side of Life.
